College Celebrates End of Year Successes

After a strenuous year of studying everyone wants a chance to relax a bit before taking on their next challenge. Students at Berkshire College of Agriculture (BCA) had a grand opportunity to do just that on 26 June when the college held their Glitz & Glamour Summer Ball. The hard working scholars got posh and enjoyed gaming tables, drinks, dancing to DJ spun tunes and joyful camaraderie.

The Student Development Team at BCA organised the party for all students 16 and over. Student Development Officer (SDO) Natasha Hall says their event was meant “to mark the end of the year and celebrate their success. For some, they have finished at BCA and will move on to university or employment, so it’s a great way to mark achievements with their peers.” SDO’s support students with a wide range of issues, and hold functions throughout the year such as the Winter Ball, BCA’s Got Talent, fashion shows and sports events.

Established in 1949 near Maidenhead, the college was originally a training centre for agricultural workers. The program has grown greatly over the decades, and now includes full time programmes in 19 disciplines. Those include media production, science, health and social care, animal management, art and design, beauty therapy and business. Set on a 400 acre estate, the college’s “focus and commitment is getting students ready for work and/or further study.”

Hall says they marketed the ball via social media and throughout the college, several months before the event. “Social media definitely helps to generate interest in events like ours,” she adds. Organisers made sure the in-house photographer was available, as well as a “brilliant” company that provided photo booth style pictures for student mementos. Hall notes that students had a great time, and especially enjoyed the dance competition.

“The highlight has to be the BCA dance off,” she says. “Students nominated their chosen songs beforehand and went head to head to show off their best moves. The successful student dancer ultimately competed against Adam Robinson, our Student Development Team Manager, who used his best Michael Jackson moves, but unfortunately lost.  It was most certainly a crowd pleaser!”

Hall believes the keys to a successful event are really quite straightforward. “It took a lot of team work and good organisation,” she states. “We triple checked every detail to ensure we had, hopefully, thought of everything! Organisation and thorough planning are key when arranging an event like ours.”
