Young Music Label Helps to Showcase Local & National Bands
When you hear the phrase ‘music festival’ it’s no doubt that thoughts of massive shows like Glastonbury and Reading come up. While seeing loads of well-known bands is sure to be a good time, let’s not forget that hearing your favorite new acts can be just as much fun as any muddy mosh pit.
Coffee Jingle Records, based in Portsmouth, Hampshire, held their inaugural Coffee Jingle Festival on 17th and 18th October at The Cellars at Eastney. Organiser Martin Wake, who co-founded the label while studying at Southampton Solent University, says they wanted to “promote local bands and attempt to start a yearly festival with a solid debut.” Eighteen bands were featured during the fest, including the label’s star players and national acts.
For Wake, highlights include the Friday performances of Caught In A Crossfire (CIAC) and Brassick, two bands that “really performed on a different level.” CIAC formed in 2010 and is signed to Coffee Jingle. The five piece punk band counts The Offspring, Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World and The Cure among their influences and is currently working on their first full length album.
Brassick is a four member punk outfit from Worcester who set out in 2012. They “mash up punk, ska and metal influences with vocals unlike any other band to create a raw, punk rock sound with a message” to make you “open your eyes and ears.” The band has played the Rebellion Festival, Wigfest and around Europe, including hitting stages in Scotland, Ireland and France.
Wake promoted the event with interviews for Pure FM, Express FM and Guide 2 Portsmouth, and a story was written about the festival for Solent Music. He believes, though, that the Guide 2 story brought in the most ticket sales. Putting on an event with so many moving parts can prove difficult, and Wake advises others to “have backup options ready to use at the drop of a hat” in case bands or suppliers fall through.
